Shape Ames into a place where young people want to build their futures
Ames is a great place to live and work, and I would like to see more of my ISU peers build their futures here after they graduate. In addition to bringing well-paying jobs, I will work to improve our quality of life by investing in public facilities, parks, and cultural and community programs. These are what make Ames such a great place to live, and we should continue to invest in them for future generations.
Prioritize building an inclusive and accessible community
Growing up in Ames taught me the values of inclusivity and kindness. Ames should be a place where all are welcome to live and build their futures. I will listen and take action to ensure Ames is a safe place where all people and cultures feel they belong, as well as support the work of the newly formed City of Ames Diversity & Inclusion Team. Our community can benefit from an open and proactive dialogue about what diversity means in and for Ames.
An essential part of building an inclusive and accessible Ames is ensuring people can afford to live in our great city. I will support creating more affordable housing options. I will protect tenants' rights, neighborhoods, and promote housing justice for all. We will all benefit when our community offers residents who live or work in Ames a diverse range of housing choices.
Fight climate change on a local level
Climate change is a global emergency that demands immediate local action. The international scientific consensus is that on our current trajectory, Earth will reach a tipping point by 2030 that will bring irreversible ecological damage, extreme weather, and human suffering. As a young person looking towards the future, I consider confronting this crisis one of my main priorities on council.
To do this I will support efforts for Ames to become carbon-neutral. To meet this goal, Ames needs to adopt a climate plan that will help us reduce our emissions. Shorter-term measures we should implement to make our city more sustainable include municipal composting, recycling, and other waste-reduction programs. I will work to make these programs easy to use and low-cost for all residents. Finally, because of the far-reaching effects it will have on our cities, climate change will always be one of the lenses through which I will make decisions when on council.
